The National Art Center, Tokyo was designed by Kisho Kurokawa together with Nihon Sekkei and was built on the site of the University of Tokyo's Institute of Industrial Science. The construction, from July 2002 to May 2006, took more than three and a half years. The building features earthquake countermeasures and environmentally friendly aspects. With a basement and four above-ground levels, the total floor space of the NACT is about 48,000 square meters.

Architecture

QAre the people sitting inside the exhibition galleries the curators?

The seated staff members are observers, not curators. Although they can answer simple questions, their main task is maintenance of the work. Please understand that they may be unable to answer your questions in certain circumstances, especially at busy times.

QAre you looking for new employees?
A

A

Information about employment and part-time job opportunities will be posted on our website when required.

A

A

We have not implemented such a scheme.

QWhy is it cold inside the exhibition galleries?
A

A

From the viewpoint of protecting the work, it is necessary to keep the temperature and humidity constant 24 hours a day. This means the temperature is often set lower than the outside air in the summer. When you visit us, we recommend you to bring a coat, to wear clothes that are easily adjustable to take account of the temperature.
